It’s interesting to see which battles she picks to fight and when she decides to bide her time and save her strength.

This can result in making it feel unnerving at times with the jagged way she thinks, but it's a clever method of constructing an unsettling atmosphere. In her head, Milly talks to her murderous psycho mother, and it’s clear that although mom scares the shit out of her, Milly also loves her. With doctor patient confidentiality, I just can’t get my head around a teenage girl opening up to her psychologist who also happens to be her foster dad. Some things in the book were a little too far fetched for me personally such as a kid from the poor estate hanging out on the doorstep of what was being described as a very affluent house. The fact is, she was unable to help any of the children, and the last murder was just too much for Annie to bear, because she was very close to the victim. We learn how Annie’s mother abused and murdered young children in her ‘playground’, a hidden area of their house. We could really feel her struggling not to give in to the darker side as the voice of her mother in her head pushes her to that darker side.

After the last few years of hearing that every new psychological thriller is the "new gone girl", I became fed up of having my hopes constantly dashed. I can appreciate how hard it would have been to get inside the head of such a troubled young girl but Land’s characterisation should be commended for its authenticity.Annie too, has suffered terribly at the hands of her mother, but at the age of fifteen, she decides to inform the police of her mother's crimes. Her reasoning of her current situation and past and the mental manoeuvres she undertakes to function and keep her mother’s voice at bay were interesting and, of course, you’re never entirely sure how much to trust her or her version of people or events. Good Me Bad Me” was a creepy and captivating character study of Milly, in addition to being a psychological thriller.

The style of writing lends itself well to the sharp pacey storyline and keeps you wondering what will happen next. The restraint is effective, as is the gradual revealing of what most troubles and nags at Annie/Milly.Ali's debut novel Good Me Bad Me is an international bestseller and will be translated into twenty-two languages. His wife, Saskia, is remote and probably narcissistic, and his teenage daughter Phoebe is able to hide her feelings, her attitudes, and her behavior.

There have been murmurings about Good Me, Bad Me on social media for months, the murmurs have now become shouts, it’s clear that this debut novel has already made an impact and when it’s finally published early next. The story is very well developed to provide a tense atmosphere with that edge of suspicion and apprehension that Annie was either more involved or will repeat what her nature may preordain. And that’s before we see that his family might not be the best environment for her in this delicate transitional period. But she is fighting on all sides with very little help or support: the sessions she has with Mike seemed pretty superficial to me and she had very little external contact or help, except for Joan, who accompanies her into court but is otherwise little present, and her art teacher, whose behaviour seems flighty at best and erratic or irresponsible at worst. I think this is a very good debut novel and I am already looking forward to reading more from Ali Land.
