This “parenting” book doesn’t give you any cheap advice or simple lessons and that’s why I appreciated this book, because raising a successful human means demonstrating an example and living up to TRICK values yourself aaaaalll life long!

Growing up in an orthodox Jewish family in the 1950s, the author experienced her fair share of damaging parental behavior. Her mother, on the other hand, had been consistently warm and loving; the author has tried to replicate this and build an equally close relationship with her own daughters while rejecting the unyielding sexism expressed by her father. The key with parenting books including this one is to find the nuggets you want to implement in your own family.

Admittedly, I am divorced, but truly don't believe that my decision to pursue love and happiness is modeling for my child "how to live an angry life," as Wojcicki describes it. She wanted her kids to be able to go off into the world and do great things – not live in fear of rejection or needing their hand held. Our goal is not to take these challenges and the growth that results from them away from our children – the fatal flaw of helicopter parenting – but to help our children face these challenges and learn from them. Polls show that most Americans report not trusting their neighbors, as a matter of fact most don’t even know their neighbors. I confess that I couldn't read the next section on kindness after feeling that she had shared what I felt were many unkind words the pages prior.

However, she repeats herself a lot, and it feels very lacking in terms of any understanding of a final destination. The children of such parents have their days pre-planned out from beginning to end, are rarely allowed to play or socialize, and are critiqued on the most minute elements of their performance in school. As we face an epidemic of parental and childhood anxiety, Woj has the advice every parent wants to hear: climb out of that helicopter and relax .Esther Wojcicki shares her views on parenting and educating (she's also a high school teacher) in this highly readable book. I don’t think of myself as a helicopter parent but you’re right that we all have at least a bit of that in us. She weaves in stories from her personal experience as the head of Palo Alto High School’s journalism program, and her parenting experience raising two successful daughters. Her parents’ religion informed their belief that a woman’s place was in the home, and at age eighteen, when she rejected marriage in favor of attending college, her parents cut her off financially. It is part memoir that reads easily as it is chock full of trajectory changing events that shaped her worldview.

Woj doesn't cite everything in the book as it's mentioned but there is an appendix and that makes it super easy to read without feeling lost or that you need a child development degree or more.A child already conditioned to believe their choices don’t matter is much more likely to end up in abusive relationships, much more likely to be taken advantage of, and much more vulnerable to things like sexual harassment and coercion.

Do you constantly do things for them because you don’t have time to wait for them to figure it out on their own, or you can’t stand their whining when they don’t get it right away? Early on, most of the examples/stories that she relayed in the book were parent stories, but the quickly transitioned almost exclusively into teacher stories. If you can get past the name-dropping and bragging, the author’s information really is extremely valuable. My wife and I have one main goal in life and that is to raise resilient, productive children, who can forge their own path.
