One of the few benefits of my ageing memory is that I’d forgotten the story and so could be taken again on this rollercoaster of skullduggery as two fortune hunters get caught up in an intrigue of epic proportions. At its heart are Ada Clare and Richard Carstone, who find love - and terrible loss - through their involvement in the endless battle. S. scandal, suave British confidence men and longtime friends Guy Horton and Max Wingate encounter sister, Vita, and daughter, Diana, of millionaire British armaments dealer Fabian Charnwood. A chance meeting on deck brings them a tempting new target in the shape of Miss Charnwood and her niece, the beautiful Diana, only child of the immensely wealthy Fabian Charnwood. The canal bridge at point 7 has now reopened but, at point 8, the path through the churchyard of St Stephen’s Church has been blocked off at the far end, so you need to go left through a gap just beyond the churchyard and keep left around it to rejoin the riverside.

The now-private path along the top of Sutcliffe Wood from point 6 has been blocked by barbed wire at the bottom end and there is a dispute over this claimed Right of Way. There is a good sense of the futility of it all, in that forces beyond our control repeat the horrors of history again and again. Readers will find more than one strange echo of more recent times--notable in the Robert Maxwell story--in this riveting new novel.

As usual, Goddard sucked me in, despite his use of what feels like out of date language (perhaps intentional, given the period), and characters that seem to alternate between the astute and the gullible. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Set in 1931 and written and performed in such language of the time, it took me a while to settle in to. I am glad I read it though, but it is not Mr Goddard's finest in my opinion, not because of the writing or the plot but just because I felt bad about the main characters.

From Point 6, the original route along the lovely riverside meadows is now impassable due to a new development at Box Trees Mill. It is simple to avoid this though by continuing up Hob Lane past the Hobbit, then turning right onto Goose Nest Lane. Whilst sometimes the book can be a bit slow to develop as we are introduced to the characters and developing plot line, the end is always satisfying with few, if any loose ends. Aboard ship, opportunity presents itself in the form of Diana Charnwood, beautiful daughter of a fabulously wealthy munitions dealer.Ce que j’ai regretté par rapport à d’autres romans de Goddard, c’est que les personnages sont plutôt antipathiques et caricaturaux. This one has all the great characters and historical twists to qualify as one of his stronger novels.

Moral ambiguity is the name of the game but, regardless of all his flaws, I was more behind Guy Horton as time went on.Comme souvent chez Robert Goddard, le héros est un homme faible et balloté par des évènements qu’il ne maîtrise pas. I love the idea that each book is numbered and limited, they're extra special because they're personalised with those sought-after signatures, and they are not on tip-in pages. Mais la mécanique bien huilée se grippe lorsque Max tombe vraiment amoureux de Diana et envisage de l’épouser, ce que refuse totalement Fabian Charnwood qui a déjoué le manège des deux amis. His 1st 4 novels were word-heavy, but you never felt bored reading or thought that any parts of the story were meandering or redundant. The atmosphere was a mix of sadness, anger, celebration and hope – sadness and anger to see this place go but a celebration of memories, good times and long-standing friendships.

The story was a bit slow to start and it seemed to be a bit unusual for Goddard based on the other books that I have read of his. Keep reader guessing: check, although sometimes things were clearly going to happen, but how, we didn't know. He is the master of the plot twist, a compelling and engrossing storyteller and one of the best known advocates for the traditional virtues of pace, plot and narrative drive.July 2022: The CMA has extended the consideration of undertakings in lieu of reference until 7 September 2022. Read this one after Past Caring and In Pale Battalions and you will be well on your way to be a Goddard fan. Eyes were filling up when narrating the memories and family traditions of coming to Goddard’s (and Deptford) and how much this place means to them.
