Division, rate (tempo) and transport buttons complete the line-up here, along with a tap tempo button for matching the sequence/arpeggio to a live performance. It’s the only thing I own that’s white, I have 3 black Elektrons and enjoy the contrast tbh, the black one was a sort of dark brown anyway and didn’t match. Put simply, the Arturia KeyStep 37 is a 37-note keyboard controller with a suite of hands-on MIDI controls, smart sequencing and intriguing scale/chord functions.

You'll be using these tools, as well as an impressive responsiveness and streamlined workflow to craft your own signature sonics in no time at all! Joining the modes from the original 32‑key model and KeyStep Pro is Pattern mode, which was an innovation on the MicroFreak synth. The Arturia KeyStep Range all come with a free download of Ableton Live Lite, an accessible music-making suite for your Mac or PC.Choose from 12 chord types, an array of strum effects, and spread the voices out into complex velocity-sensitive parts that respond like a stringed instrument. The KeyStep 37 goes to places most MIDI controllers fear to step, with full standalone capability and both MIDI and CV connectivity as well as the usual USB. When you purchase a sofware licence you are effectively purchasing a code that will allow you to use the acquired software on your computer. Elektron boxes can record external MIDI onto the sequencer if the MIDI is being sent to the auto channel: get the other sequencer sending notes on the auto channel, put the track into live record mode, and it’ll do it. Record, perform, and experiment with a compact, accessible keybed that’s familiar and enjoyable in equal measure.

The KeyStep 37’s sequencer is fundamentally the same as on the classic 32, but it is elevated by the new scales and chord features. The latest addition to Arturia’s ‘Step’ family, the KeyStep 37 feels reassuringly sturdy when we first remove it from its trendy box. As with that controller, the KeyStep 37 features an eight-mode arp and a polyphonic sequencer with an eight-slot pattern memory. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. One other thing, which may be changeable via some settings that I have not been able to find, is that if used for sending pitch voltage it seems that the higher voltage cutoff is a little badly placed with the keys.

Custom moulded to fit the contours of the unit whilst leaving USB connections in place, the KeyStep 37 can sit ready for operation. It sits in the middle of the Arturia Keystep Range and is one of the most feature-packed MIDI controllers available. Arturia’s BeatStep and KeyStep MIDI keyboard controllers have carved a niche by spanning the realms of analogue and digital control arguably better than any other range.
