It looks like a contemporary fiction about crowded and very unlikable characters’ connections with each other! Underneath the blood, all that blood, there was something else, something older, sweet and rank, like lilies left too long in the vase. The toilet paper around her forearm bloomed scarlet, her limb throbbing gently as the blood pulsed out of her.

In retrospect it did explained things, it was the moment all should have become clear in my mind (as I’m sure it will in the minds of more switched-on readers). I didn't plan on reading another Paula Hawkins, but Rosamund Pike narrates and I thought just maybe. The author was trying to tell too many stories in one novel, and all the various plot threads step all over each other.

International bestselling author Paula Hawkins may always be best-known for her record-shattering debut, The Girl on the Train. Additionally, there is an old lady Irene who is Angela's neighbor and friend and who is now supported for her grocery purchases by Laura.

And we know that Hawkins loves her unstable female characters whom the reader feels frustrated and sympathy with, in equal measure.Harks back to peak-period Barbara Vine with its beautifully drawn characters and its offbeat London setting .

out of 12 masterclass Four Star read, where simmering pain, injustice and most of all revenge, is a slow fire burning. In particular, Pike captures the melancholy of the widowed Irene, whose frail appearance and occasional mishaps prompt others to condescend and patronise rather than treat her as a sentient adult. A Slow Fire Burning has a large cast, which I found easy to keep track of, with interlocking stories that they aren’t aware of themselves. This was this month’s book club pick, and I loved The Girl on the Train by the same author, which I read some time ago a couple of times, which is quite unusual for me, so I was really excited to get my hands on a copy, so much so that I bought myself a hardcover copy thinking I would love it. Laura was in a horrific accident when she was ten years old and has been left with significant injuries, including some social issues where she cannot control herself or act appropriately at times. An unflinching look at the damage sparked by grief, loss and betrayal - and the revenge and retribution that ensues. The three women’s back stories are shared in flashbacks while their lives intersect as the novel builds toward its climax.
