Description

He was one of the numerous Hungarian artists who flourished in Paris beginning between the World Wars. In the early 21st century, the discovery of more than 200 letters and hundreds of drawings and other items from the period 1940–1984 has provided scholars with material for understanding his later life and career. Published for the first time in 1933 and originally designed by Brassaï himself, this is a high-quality reproduction of his legendary first book of photographs.

This book totally took my mind off my surroundings though and I was stuck in a reverie about summer and travel plans. The gradation of tones is wonderfully subtle, describing an apparently infinite range of black and near-black tones.

As I no longer have the older version I cannot check, but I will almost certainly replace it at some point now that I know that it is available once again. When I slowly turn the pages of the 62 duotone photographs this book consists of, based on Brassaï’s original photographic plates, the twilight world slowly draws me into its ‘phantom planes’, and in doing so this world at moments worries me, as If I am with delay soon about to discover something troublesome within its frames.

In a 1968 catalogue for a Brassaï exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, novelist Lawrence Durrell wrote: “He is very much a child of Paris, and in some ways the city’s most faithful biographer. Brass's ability to capture the mysticism of 'Paris by Night' instills a romance and love of fi noir for all. FIRST EDITION OF BRASSAÏ’S MASTERPIECE, ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL AND BEAUTIFUL OF ALL PHOTOBOOKS. Compare the lovely, striking, somewhat mysterious image on the cover with the drab reproduction of the same photograph on page 14. All quotes and shortened quotes are from the book and credited as: ©Brassaï: Paris by Night (Flammarion, 2011).
