All her life Violet has grappled with her ability to sense the echoes of those who have been murdered and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Critical reception for Dead Silence has been positive and Locus included it on their list of the best horror novels of 2022. Alternatively, in reading some of these startlingly original and eerie sequences, readers will be relieved they have both feet firmly planted on the ground rather than aimlessly drifting through uncharted space on the ghost ship ‘Aurora’.

But then again, Voller excels at stating the obvious and being exceptionally annoying while doing so.Dead Silence gives you the suffocating claustrophobia of 2001: A Space Odyssey mixed with the horrors of Alien. This novel felt like it was just a mash-up of other horror movies/novels hoping to combine them to deliver a winner and it was nowhere near that in any way, shape, or form. The other characters were a bit cliché and stereotypical but they didn’t frustrate me as much as Claire. I ate this book in one sitting because I was in the mood to be freaked out and it delivered tremendously. If you’re been following me for a while, you’ll have noticed there is never any horror reviews on this blog.

As we learn, there was plenty of scary stuff to come and for some reason the author just jets us away from it all unexpectedly. Cemetery Dance also posted a review, stating that it was "A genre mash-up that easily captivates its audience but struggles to utilize that up-front investment to maintain interest. A. Barnes’ Dead Silence, a SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn’t yet ended. It’s hard not to view that bit of flawed tape—and everything else on board—with an overly sentimental fondness, simply because it’s about to be gone. Because this book is set on a spaceship and it has a mystery of what actually happened to the people on this spaceship… I loved it. Generic characters, unlikable main hero and the poor reader ready to cry with every sentence made this a book I just couldn't finish. the narrator of the story has a great voice, but when she tries to do male voices, or emotional ones or just pronounce hard 'P's like in the word 'up' I just got annoyed.
