Rivier claims that there were no war heroes, only scared children, and Cormier's lack of a clear definition of heroism leaves the reader feeling just as confused and ambivalent as the characters. Heroes and 17 other books were challenged by Richard and Alice Ess, founders of the Fairfax County, Virginia group Parents Against Bad Book in Schools.

There is a fine line between what it means to be a good or bad person and Cormier showed us just how blurred the line can be.When Francis comes back he thinks that it's not that same anymore because he has to cover his face and people didn't like him that way but when he goes back to school he mets a girl name Nicole , the girl of her dreams. This novel portrays the dilemma of taking justice into your own hands or showing mercy to someone who also happens to have a huge influence on your life but committed such an immoral act. Some critics have suggested that the character of Francis Cassavant is based on the author Robert Cormier. At parts I really wanted to shut the book because it was painful to think about how it would be to be without a nose, raw cheeks and flaps for ears. Biography: Robert Cormier was a journalist and author, acclaimed for his young adult novels with their uncompromising examination of contemporary issues.

This strange tale of guilt and heartbreak reminds me of Guy De Monpassent's "The Necklace" where misunderstanding and resentment propels people in to decisions that could have been avoided. He hopes to rekindle his relationship with her but she rebuffs him, claiming that she can never forget his betrayal at the Wreck Center.

At first Francis is too shy to even approach Nicole but when she starts dancing at the Wreck Center the two become close.

Distraught, Francis waited outside of Nicole’s house for days until she finally came out and angrily sent him away.

Under Larry’s tutelage, Francis became the Ping-Pong champion, which secured Nicole’s attention, and made him a hero among the children of Frenchtown. When Francis is twelve years-old a new girl moves to town from Albany, New York named Nicole Renard and Francis instantly falls in love with her. Larry opens up a recreation hall for youth and teaches Francis how to play ping pong and a young girl names Nicole how to dance. When Nicole realizes that Francis heard what was going on but failed to protect her, their relationship deteriorates. I discovered Robert Cormier near the end of my final year of high school, the few of his books I read leaving quite the impression on me.
