Beth Mead is one of the world's most talented footballers, a Golden Boot winner and Player of the Tournament at the UEFA Euro 2022, England Player of the Year 2021-22, Arsenal Player of the Season 2021-22, and runner-up for the 2022 Ballon d'Or. In February 2022 she launched the Beth Mead Scholarship with Teesside University to support students who have the potential to reach a professional level in women's football. I liked that she was completely honestly about her feelings at certain points in her career, she definitely wasn’t scared of sharing the lows as well as the highs.

Unlike some memoirs, at no point did I feel like I was waiting to get to a more interesting bit, not one part felt drawn out. I re-watched and re-watched Russo’s back heel goal and then watched the final quite literally on the edge of my seat or on the floor closer to the TV because I couldn’t sit still with the excitement and then I couldn’t stop dancing around after the win. I loved when Beth told Vivianne Miedema that they’d both been nominated for a Ballon d'Or and Viv “stared impassively” and said “Yes, it’s my fifth time.I really enjoyed reading this book, I could not put it down and stayed up far too late to finish it. You don’t know what is going on in other people’s lives, what challenges they have overcome, or are keeping hidden. They’ve transformed women’s football and I’m so excited to continue to follow and support the growth of the game. From childhood, Beth wanted to play football and was supported and encouraged by her parents and younger brother.

Anyone reading this review who isn’t from England might not realise how captivated we were as a country by the 2022 European Championships. I also appreciate the effort Beth puts towards women’s football, and I love that her passion is so obvious and strong.

I got through the book quite quickly, and felt myself reliving the Euros and the emotions I felt watching the games. This diary style retelling of the euros was perfect, translating the feeling of pressure Beth felt in training sessions, games and tournaments, from her experience with homesickness and shyness when she was younger to having to adapt to a post-European champion who can’t go to McDonald’s without getting recognised life. This book gave us an insight into Beth as a person and the struggles and hurdles she went through to get to where she is today. Being able to read the player’s perspective of one the biggest turning points of my life just made me love everything that happened this summer more. Since this book came out, Beth has been voted Sports Personality of the Year for 2022 - quite rightly, in my opinion.
